Steve Cannon Out At WTVN/Columbus

(Thanks to AllAccess for the tip.)

Long-time WTVN/610 Columbus late night host Steve "Boom Boom" Cannon, who's been at the Clear Channel news/talker for some 20-plus years, is no longer in the building. The station's website schedule now lists the syndicated "Coast to Coast Rewound" in the 10 PM-1 AM slot, a repeat of earlier shows from Premiere's George Noory. Noory airs live on the station from 1-5 AM.

We haven't heard why Cannon no longer addresses his nighttime listening army on WTVN, but we wouldn't at all be surprised if he's the latest victim of Clear Channel's budget cuts. The move comes just a week or so after the company's Cleveland cluster let go three employees for that very reason, including talk WTAM/1100 afternoon co-host Kim Mihalik and rock WMMS/100.7 overnight voice "Seth the Barbarian".

Cannon's name is familiar to long-time Northeast Ohio listeners. Before ending up in Columbus, Cannon held down middays at then-news/talk WHLO/640 in Akron in the mid-1970's. WHLO is, of course, once again a talk station under the ownership of Clear Channel, but this was the station's first period in the format under former owner Susquehanna. Following his time at WHLO, "Boom Boom" then headed north to WGAR/1220 in Cleveland, then to a brief stint in radio in Florida.

And to prove all news ties together in radio, WHLO's former owner, a York, PA-based broadcaster and dinnerware maker, recently announced it was selling its broadcast operations to a group headed by Cumulus Media...which owns a number of Youngstown/Warren market stations...along with Canton rocker WRQK/106.9. The bow of connections is neatly tied when you remember that 106.9 used to be WHLQ-FM, which was owned by...Susquehanna.

i remember listening to hlo640 when they did new/talk live and local--nick anthony mornings, bbom boom at noon, stevefullerton in pm drive, hacksaw hamilton on sprts at 6pm, and morning news with bill jasso, dave leiberth and carl day--long befor e they were able to become 24 hour. boom booms trivia would leave you guessing and smiling at the same time, whilenobody could ever figure out what nick meant by signing off decolores. i'm sorry to hear he's not htere. driving home from columbus tonite, i heard george noory in his place, even tho it is election nite. btrw, oa, did you fill in again at whlo this year on election coverage? david5258

I have Listened to Steve Cannon most of my life, and am sad to see him go. I think they went to BIG LOTS for his replacement. I hope with Steves skill and humor and wittyness he will re surface here soon.... We Miss Ya STEVE!!!

SO glad to see Cannon go. He was innane at the best of times. WTVN can't go wrong replacing Cannon with Coast-to-Coast AM reruns.

Cannon's ratings had to be in the dumper.

He was an opinionated old fool.

Was sorry to hear of Steve Cannon
being let go. Yet!...they keep dry
as sand-paper Corby on the air?
I do feel el Corby had some-thing
to do with that. He would alway's
make snard remarks about Steve.

Thank's Steve Cannon, and I'm
certain we will hear you again soon.

By firing Steve Cannon , Clear Chanel Communication shows its incensitivity to the local issues of Central Ohio. 610 wtvn is no longer a station worth of my attention . The morning personalities of WTVN are so narrow in their programming that leads me to look for news elsewhere. There is more to news then OSU football.

Can WTVN get any lower? I quit listening between 9 and 4 - too much syndication, now the same after ten PM. I've listed to BoomBoom since Akron days, and will miss him mucho. I do listen to Connors and Corby, and sometimes Joel, but guess I better be looking for a station I can listen to all day with local talk. I hate tv, but I am a loyal radiophile! DT

It's about time they canned him. The only reason I listened to 610 when he was on was to get a laugh at how crazy he was. I swear, he put Bush above God. According to him, bush could do no wrong, no matter what. I'm sure he can get a job with the administration, considering all the butt kissing he did!

Steve was predictable...and boring as a result. The one thing he could do though was pronounce words correctly and use them in the correct context. Will they can Cornell McCleary for those offenses? Oh, and he is also boring. Tell me when to turn 610 on again.

Hasn't the announcement been made yet?? Clear Channel has been in negotiations with the new DJ that is taking the 10pm-1am slot for a week now.. The 'Dave, From Powell Show' will premier on Nov. 28th...(I here Steve is going to be a regular caller)

I always felt that he called off of work way to much. I don't know how many times I had to listen to Glenn Beck going to work because Steve Boom Boom called off yet again, sometimes he would call off for a whole week. So I personally feel that they just didn't want to take his stuff anymore thinking he has priority over other broadcasters. I always felt that he was sick thats why he commented oddly when people asked him how he was doing with an answer like I'm feeling well I think as if he is sick and doesn't want people to know it.

Have listen to Boom Boom Cannon for as long as I can remember. Go to bed at 11:00 pm every night and automately turn on WTVN. What a disappointment when Steve was missing and a rerun of the Noury show was on . ( just happen to hear that same show from the night before when a bout of insommia set in ) Guess I`ll have to station surf at 11 PM and hopefully find Boom Boom at another local station.

Boom-Boom come back! Although I enjoy Coast-to-Coast, enough is enough. Steve is a great personality with a wealth of entertainment contacts and knowledge of trivia.

Clear Channel made a big mistake!!!

The strength of 610 is their local personalities. Whether you liked Cannon or not is irrelevant. If the station continues to syndicate out the wazoo, they'll lose their faithful base (including me). Like another had commented, they're going to Big Lots to fill the slots and it isn't going to work. Riley's OK, but I liked Sterling and tolerated Cannon. This is not the time for them to abandon the formula that was working.

I too was sad to see Steve go, as I was when Sterling left. I can not say that I agree with all of there opinions, but I did enjoy their shows.

Hope they replace the late night radio rampage with the 'Dave in Powell' show. Otherwise, its 820 and 1230 all the way.
