UPDATE: "Ted FM" Goes to "Talk FM" in Columbus

As expected, North American Broadcasting adult hits WTDA/103.9 "Ted FM" in the Columbus market is flipping to FM talk - with a heavy dose of sports talk - as "Talk FM".

The station's website sports a new logo in the same color scheme as the old one, and has the new programming schedule - which includes the previously announced addition of Premiere's Glenn Beck for the 10 AM-1 PM slot.

(Beck is live from 9-noon, but WTDA is keeping Premiere's "Bob and Tom" for the 6-10 AM time slot.)

Also new to the schedule, as we're told was announced on the air on North American rock WBZX/99.7 "The Blitz" on Saturday, is an afternoon drive local sports talk show hosted by WBZX morning and weekend sports voice "Mark the Shark".

Mr. Shark, who apparently carries the name Mark Howell when he's out from behind the sports microphone, hosts a two-hour Saturday morning sports show on 99.7 - in addition to his primary role doing sports and news on the "Blitz"'s morning drive show. His WTDA show is scheduled from 4-6 PM weekdays.

For now, the schedule on the WTDA website indicates that FOX Sports Radio will fill out the talk schedule, with future "feature programming" to be announced...

You know what...good for them. Maybe WTDA doesn't cover the whole metro, but I hope they take a share or two from WTVN. That station sucks wind. Clear Channel tries to own everything and this will be healthy for the market. Screw WTVN and whatever 1230 will be calling themselves.

They dumped Bob and Tom on 105.7 and changed teh format. They had one good book and are now below where they were. Great move CC.

Don't blame 'em for making the move, since their #s weren't very good.....but to Sports Talk?? Isn't there enuf of that in Columbus between 1460 and the sports shows already on the "new" 1230? Especially w/Neil Boortz, Clark Howard, Mike Gallagher, Rollye James, Mitch Albom, and many more conventional talkers available...and we won't even mention Randi Rhodes, Ed Schultz, Stephanie Miller(wait a minute, we just did)

Our guess: They will eventually fill 1-4 PM with something other than FSR, but couldn't do so because the Beck move prompted them to do it quickly.

Great! Another talker with the added bonus of sports. Gee, guess there are just not enough sports shows on radio in the Columbus area. Will there be enough sports figures to interview or will they end up talking to the truck driver who drops off the soap for the OSU football team? Oh well, looking at their ratings guess they can't do much worse....but wouldn't surprise me if they didn't drop more.

Bummer... I just drove through Columbus and didn't know about this change; otherwise I'd have checked it out for a bit.

It does seem like a slightly odd move to do some sports, especially when the market's major sports teams are anything OSU, a soccer squad, a fledgling hockey squad, and AAA baseball. You'd think one full sports station (1460 WBNS) and some sports stuff on WTVN seem more than sufficient.

One thing I thought about when I saw this mention, though: now that WTDA is doing talk, they can switch off the stereo pilot and soften/expand their fringe, which may help them get a "better" signal into more of Columbus proper... I know that's not technically accurate, but I think we all note mono signals seem to stretch a bit further.

collegedj - you didn't miss anything, "Ted FM" is still pumping out the Jack-ish music as last we checked, via the still-in-operation WTDA web stream, a while ago. It would appear talk takes hold Monday, as that's definitely when Beck's show starts on 103.9.

Listen for yourself:

Good point about the "turning off the stereo", by the way. It does not technically give them any more signal, but you don't get the stereo picket-fencing on the fringe of the signal...so it may expand their "listenable" range.

It's still a class A, north-suburban rimshot, but talk's probably the best format they can do on that signal. They'll probably still have complaints down by Grove City and elsewhere to the south...

Any update on where Heather Weber might be right now? Did she land a job elsewhere yet?

I hate to say it, but that "Hey, Hey" commercial for the WKYC morning show is pretty terrible. Holly looks...um, has looked better than how she's looked in the commercial.

I was disappointed to see that both this channel and 107.1 had changed formats. I have little interest in Sports radio and as far as I know plenty of other stations have that covered, and after listening to Glenn Beck for a while I've concluded his program isn't for me. I will have to find some new stations to listen to. I was willing to go with the change from the Eagle (Classic Rock) to Ted-FM's format but not this.

107.1's change was a big shock and disappointment. I have listened to that channel for years but I will also be seeking a replacement on my radio preset button for them. When I turned to the channel and heard country music, I thought it surely had to be a parody song but the joke was on longtime listeners of the channel, I suppose!

oa--driving down to c-bus this morning, i picked up tedtalk on fringe in mansfield, and very strongly in fredricksburg(sr95/71). bob and tom are not my cup of tea, but they were a good lead into glenn. following 71 thru town to grove city, the signal did NOT fade. leaving grove city tonite, foxsports radio was trying to find some guy in another state who was supposed to win a 50" HD LG plasma tv. Good toh ids and very nice cmcl for family run collision repair shop as local sponsor for both b/t and glenn. b nice to see what programming they add to round out the sked. more later

drove to hillsboro this afternoon from grove city. tedtalk was clear as a bell from grovecity going sw on 62 to 5 miles north of washington courthouse and fringe to leesburg. shark has a new sidekick in pm drive who worked with him on the blitz. good rapport between the 2. shark and partner actually help make bendit beckhams' signing for a-rod money with los angeles galaxy soccer actually sound logical.

What are they thinking? They clearly target the "baby-boomers" who are loyal and have a lot of money and now they're going to lose that audience. If I want sports, I'll tune into am radio. I'm listening to Bob and Tom in the morning and then switching stations. Anyone know a good station where I can get my fix of 70's and 80' music?
