Up Next On WKNR Saturdays: "Hammer and Booms"

On Good Karma sports talk WKNR/850 Cleveland in the Saturday 9 AM-noon slot this week:

The second "Saturday Morning Sports Show" co-hosting appearance by comedian, former FOX Sports Radio host and Euclid resident Chuck Booms.

The show comes with a built-in name this time - "Hammer and Booms" - the first name in the billing, of course, being "Rizzo on the Radio" producer/sidekick Aaron Goldhammer.

We're not sure if the show name is significant, or as usual, if anything regarding this time slot "means anything".

Booms clearly wants to do a regular show on WKNR.

But the Saturday slot, since Good Karma's Craig Karmazin took over 850 AM, has been a laundry list of local sports media types past and present, fill-ins and such.

We're wondering if it will ever have a regular host, or if it's more valuable to Mr. Karmazin to use the slot to put together piecemeal on-air work from potential regular show hosts or contributors (i.e. the Akron Beacon Journal's Brian Windhorst, who shows up as a co-host fill-in on Tony Rizzo's mid-morning show early next week).

As Good Karma continues to reshape WKNR, the smart money may be on the second answer...

I'll just offer you some constructive criticism, Chuck:

STOP TALKING OVER PEOPLE. When someone else starts to speak, you just repeat the same three words over and over and over until they're forced to stop talking. It's not that you don't have some decent takes, but your on-air etiquette is painful for us listeners.

BTW, absolutely agree with your take on how Les Moonves and CBS totally botched the Imus incident and robbed those charities by his grandstanding firing. What a shmuck he is, and the whole industry knows it.

maybe if Goldhammer would shut up for a minute Booms could talk

I thought with new ownership they would perhaps FINALLY use their weekday sports anchor guys for some weekend shows. Sad to not see that happening...no wonder so many ticker guys have left over the years. Nobody ever wants to use them over producers.

Booms is so annoying. Does he have nothing better to do than call in to Rizzo and Levine's shows all the time? What a wannabe loser who's career has completely hit rock bottom. If he was part of Karmazin's plan for WKNR, he'd already be doing PM Drive instead of Munch...who has considerably less experience than Booms. Tells you something right there. Booms isn't worth the drama.

Did Jeff Thomas leave WKNR?

Not that I know off, he probably took the week off same time as Riz.

A few things...

"no wonder so many ticker guys have left over the years"

You act as if some of the ticker guys were passed over and reached stardom elsewhere. Mark Kestecher was a radio pro from day one, there's a difference between guys that went to Syracuse for broadcasting and guys that went to the OCB. So other than Mark, who else left and went on to bigger and better things? Not Milan Jordan, not Mcnaughton (another Cuse guy).

Second of all, Booms is a pro. You might hate his style or his opinions, but nobody can question his ability to stir the pot. IMO, Booms had an outstanding syndicated show that really picked up steamed in his last 6 months (I have books to prove it in four different markets).

As for Hammer, I do think he needs to understand the difference between a producer and a co-host. The Rizzo show is not and will never be billed as the "Riz and Hammer Show." I do think Aaron has some radio talent (his production beds are pretty solid), but he has to remember that it's not his show and he shouldn't be heard responding to every caller. I do think he'll eventually learn that balance.

One of the ultimate skills Riz has as an entertaining radio host is his ability to mesh with anyone and "make his team better." You could put Riz with Bob Karlovic and you'd get entertaining radio. That's how good he is. But someone like the Hammer needs to learn that delicate balance.

Bob Karlovec and entertaining radio? The only thing Bob Karlovec would be entertaining on is NPR. His voice is perfect for classical music. I happen to like classical music.

"Bob Karlovec and entertaining radio?"

I think that was the point of the Rizzo reference. He's not entertaining, and even he can sound good with Rizzo. Some of you guys really need to catch on quicker.

I think Eddie Mularz should be on with Tony Rizzo. I really miss Eddie reading the weather in the morning

Thank you Eddie Mularz for checking in on the board

Someone needs to remind that kid goldhammer that he is a nobody, and that we are really not interested in his opinion. Word to the powers to be at knr - quit allowing nobody's like that twit to run wild on the station, and have some focus on the actual hosts of the show. It sounds like college radio with that kid on there.

Didn't Ryan McNaughton leave for a TV gig in Syracuse? Where did Milan Jordan go to? Those guys, along with Jeff Thomas and Marc Kestecher are probably the best update guys 'KNR has had.

Last I heard, McNaughton was a news producer at News 10 Now in Syracuse (a 24-hour cable service along the lines of ONN).

This morning's "Hammer and Windhorst" show was a prime example of why the producer dude should be a producer first and co-host fifth. What a snore fest. It's shows like today that should make everyone realize how fortunate Cleveland radio is to have Rizzo - now that guy can truly entertain.

exactly what does Rizzo do thats so entertaining? Its just another talk show and his opinions don't seem to be any more accurate than the next guy. Not a lot different than Roda to me.

There's no comparing any of the other KNR guys with Tony Rizzo. Rizzo is a professional entertainer who knows that just spewing sports opinion after sports opinion doesn't qualify as "entertainment." He actually involves callers into his show (something Brinda and Roda never learned). You don't just simply ban callers, you find a way to include them in a male oriented soap opera of sorts. Les Levine understood this very well on the old WHK (and if you guys don't think Les will be doing his own show after baseball season, you're fooling yourself, my sources tell me he was an absolute hit with Karmazin and advertisers during last week's guest stint).

How come Eddie Mularz keeps posting that he wants to hear himself on the air here?

Milan Jordan is doing updates part-time for a sports station in columbus.

talk radio is all about DYNAMIC personalities - this is what Rizzo and Munch bring to the table... the energy and passion both bring to the table, along with the originality of their approaches is what will draw more listeners to KNR and is probably why they got their gigs... nothing Roda does makes him a dynamic personality and his unrelenting bashing of the local coaches and managers makes him predictable and boring... what people don't understand is that talk radio isn't about being right or wrong - its about being ENTERTAINING in your delivery and management of the program... Riz and Munch get this - while Roda is bashing constantly its hard to tell where Riz and Munch stand on many issues, making their shows all the more interesting
