BREAKING NEWS: WQMX PD Mason Heads to Nashville Label

This just in, directly to us and via AllAccess (before we got a chance to post this):

Rubber City Radio country WQMX/94.9 program director/operations manager Kevin Mason is leaving the Akron Radio Center to take a job as vice president and general manager of Nashville record label Rust Records.

His last day in Akron will be October 13th, just days after he's inducted locally into the Radio and Television Broadcasters Hall Of Fame on October 8th.

Mason has kept a high profile in the Country Radio Broadcasters national organization, and at the Country Radio Seminar...

Maybe now that Mason is going some of these on air-moves will be re-done some of the talents at QMX are just awful as for the overnight slot give it to the syndicated Danny Wright who happened to be a former nighttime host from 7pm-12am about oh maybe 10 years ago. I wonder if Chuck Collins will be adding some more programing stripes if not Ken Steele certainly deserves the nod since he is an APD.

Oh that's brilliant...take the show from local, cause you can't work there, and syndicate it...duh...you sure know a lot about that place....interesting. You say the talents are awful but haven't they had pretty good numbers? I am no OA but I thought they have been holding thier own.
Will be interesting to see who fill Mason's shoes.

Can't get more local than freakin' DANNY WRIGHT, WQMX staffer. He could teach ALL of you a thing or two about how to be ENTERTAINING on a Country station.

Overnights are unrated, by the way. Certainly wouldn't hurt 'QMX to pick up the show.

Weekday talent on WQMX is pretty good - it's some of the weekenders that are awful! i.e. Jenny Lite and George "my music bed is drowning me out" McFly

Uncle Charlie! Oh my god!

Jenny Lyte is pretty good. Sure, she's not your typical DJ, but, for weekend entertainment, she's great. She brings something unique to the table. Her chit chat is light, and amusing. It's great weekend levity. I enjoy her time on the air...

As well, same with McFly, sure, it's different but who's to say different isn't good.

Danny Wright's overnight show is excellent..worth a listen and if 'QMX can get it, worth picking up..

No, she is not good. Jenny still sounds as green as the grass, there's nothing polished about her delivery - and to make matter worse, there's no sign of any kind of "personality" to make up for it. (Giggling at callers when they aren't even saying anything funny or talking like a phone-sex operator when Kenny Chesney plays doesn't count)

It's amazing how she hasn't gotten even ONE iota better in what, 3-4 years?? It's not entirely her fault since obviously none of the higher-ups (Kevin, Ken) WORK WITH THEIR TALENT. I suspect if they DO have aircheck sessions with their talent, the harshest criticism they give is "hey that sounds great, keep it up!"

Wow, you people are just jealously harsh.

I love you "academic" broadcasting types that "know all about broadcasting" but have never done crap in the industry and all you do is sit back and armchair PD radio stations.

They'd do well to reach out to area country outlet, 'QKT, for their afternoon drive talent.

With a decent PD to steer that talent, they'd have something to move on. God knows he has the voice .. I have no idea why anybody hasn't taken him from the backwoods. Voice is voice, can't teach it.

Leash that and it would be a major statement that they are local and still keeping a solid sound.

Heck, I remember listening to Dial in the 80's. You're getting a pro that's pretty smooth.

God, I sound like his agent. 13.5% please, Double D.

"God knows he has the voice "

*yawn*

Voice doesn't mean a damn thing unless you have something to say. If the schtick is good, it's better to hire Kermit the Frog than some big voiced liner-card hack.

Why in Gods name would any of you "pro's" suggest taking the show from live and local to bring back dancing Danny or any other syndicated show? You would all be the first ones to piss and moan the first time we drug something in off the Sat. You kill me with that stuff. Being from the area doesn't make the show local. Was the show local when we ran Chick Watkins on WAKR? Kevin has done an outstanding job the last 11 years and they will be HUGE shoes to fill. Nick and company are not idiots, they will find the right person to bring in and get the job done...they hired Mason didn't they?
I do like reading how you all hate our weekend part-timers(probably cause Mason threw away your tape) but find me another locally owned station where they are: 1 live and 2 sound like Alan Freed.
Kevin will be missed. And no, I have nothing to gain by saying this as he and I didn't always see eye to eye on everything but we could always work out our disagreements. He came up with some crazy shit but that's is one of the things that kept the job interesting. Matter of fact, he made me some money and I cost him some money. Sorry about the Genny being stolen.
Kevin, let me know when you need to fly me down to engineer something and make some more money. Keep in touch brother and hope you kick ass in Nashville.
George
